Paleontologist and author Dr. Donald R. Prothero will visit the Western Science Center to give his talk “Giants of the Lost World: The Biggest Dinosaurs, Snakes, Turtles, and the Weird Extinct Mammals of South America.”
Through most of its geologic history, South America was an island continent, with unique species of extinct beasts found nowhere else in the world. The largest known dinosaurs all come from South America, as did a snake as long as a school bus, and giant turtles, crocodilians, and predatory flightless birds. During the Age of Mammals, South America was inhabited by unique groups of mammals found nowhere else, which evolved to mimic the mastodonts, horses, camels, rhinos, hippos, and sabertooth cats found on other continents. The isolation of the “Lost World” ended when the Panama land bridge rose out of the sea, but the story is much more complex and interesting than most people think.
